Slovak Radio Bratislava

Music in the pyramid

"The "Slovak Radio" building in Bratislava is total nonsense and an architectural masterpiece - depends on who you ask. Their radio productions are quality."

The Slovak Radio building is total nonsense to some and an architectural masterpiece to others. You either love it or hate it  This unusual, quite bizarre building is in the shape of an upside down pyramid. Some people say, even nowadays, that they would never want to work there, because it necessarily must concentrate or emit bad energy.

The building was erected for one sole purpose - to house a radio station. It took 16 years to complete and it's been in use for more than 30 years. It has many firsts – for example it was the first building to use steel and in such substantial amounts. And there's actually another pyramid inside which houses recording studios to make them perfectly soundproof.

You can get into the entrance hall and walk around a bit, but you won't get farther if you're not a radio guest or about to attend a concert. Concerts here are organised by various institutions, so make sure to check the website of the Slovak Radio Symphonic Orchestra or Citylife to see what's on at this venue. The classical concerts by the Symphonic orchestra are played live on radio and are free. They usually take place in the big concert hall – it's a beautiful and cosy venue with the biggest organ in Central Europe which looks very elegant. Just like the whole building, it's pretty unique - suspended on big strings to protect it from outside vibrations and perfect for recordings. And some of the concerts are free!
