The best "Croquettes de Crevettes" of Brussels - that award goes to Fernand Obb almost every year.
This little restaurant and counter is located in the heart of Saint Gilles and is a hotspot for Belgian popular cuisine. All of their products are Belgian and carefully selected. This is the perfect stop before a night out, because the food is made with love for the product and love for Belgium and Brussels.
They are famous for their croquette de crevettes, but what is it and why is it so popular in Belgium?
It's a shrimp croquette, made with shrimps from the North Sea. They are undone by hand and prepared in a creamy "roux" with bisque. This filling is coated with egg and bread crumbs and deep-fried. The shrimp croquettes are served with fried parsley and a little salad. Also on the menu, cheese croquettes, you can try one of both, it's just delicious.
But they have more than only croquettes. They also have burgers, with boudin blanc (typical Belgian sausage), Halloumi and more. Or a Fricadelle, another typical Belgian sausage.
And last but not least, they don't have Belgian fries like you know them, they have Gaufrites, actually one big fried potato in the form of a waffle.
Fernand Obb, is a great place, it's a random name, Fernand is the name of the owner's cat and Obb is coming from the old name “Ob Brussels”, which the Saint-Gilles area was called back in the days.
