When I have a long layover, I don't want to sit inside the airport. I want to explore as much of the city as I can! If you have a layover at LAX, here's the perfect adventure to dip out of the airport and live like a local in 2-3 hours: Eat, walk, beach.
Start with lunch at Hank's Italian. Hank’s is a classic over-the-counter pizza and sandwich joint that’s been serving locals since 1969. Grab a pie or a toasted veggie sandwich with provolone on crispy French bread to go. One sandwich can easily feed two (unless you thiqqq boiii). There are two tiny tables for dining on the sidewalk, but I recommend a picnic at the beach or drive along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH #1).
Trask Triangle Park is a great place to picnic with green grass and shady trees. It has picnic tables and views of all the 777s flying out of LAX. I like to eat here for shade. Then, walk down Waterview Trail, which leads straight to Playa Del Ray beach.
The beach is the best thing LA has going on. What's greater than Mother Nature? Soak up the sun, relax in the sand or play volleyball on the courts of the Olympians. Hit the waves or watch the sea lions and fishermen. Locals call them "the rocks off century", where "many a big fish" have been caught. I love to come here before a night flight and watch the sunset over the ocean.
