The French Institute of Latin America's Cinema is truly a hidden jewel. Although art and independent film viewers do not go beyond the commercial chains like Cinemex and Cinepolis, these type of films have obtained more screenings in Mexico City these last years. La Cineteca Nacional is where most locals get their international and national art films fix. However, this makes La Cineteca a very frequented place with long lines and sold-out screenings.
If you are a local and are looking forward to seeing that art/independent film but do not want to wait in line or are just far away from La Cineteca, Cinema IFAL is less crowded and the atmosphere is peaceful. Even if you are just visiting the city you are bound to be around Reforma at some point and Cinema IFAL is at a walking distance from there. The prices are way lower than the commercial theaters and offer discounts to students and professors.
