If you ever need a quiet spot to catch your breath while in Sofia’s center, here is a place most people pass by without noticing: the Archaeological Park Western Gate of Serdica. It is hidden between buildings and just steps away from the busy streets.
The Western Gate was one of the main entrances to ancient Serdica and dates back to the 2nd - 4th century AD. It was part of the fortress wall that once protected the city. Serdica was an important administrative and strategic hub in the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine the Great is even believed to have said: Serdica is my Rome.
I often come here for a short break – just to sit on one of the benches, eat lunch outside, and enjoy the peacefulness. Most of the time, there are no people, and it is incredibly quiet. That is part of its charm.
And don’t worry – there is a security guard, so it is completely safe. Keep in mind that between October and March the park closes at 17:00 in the afternoon.
If you are in the area fill your bottle from the mineral fountains. The water is safe to drink and comes straight from the famous springs beneath Sofia.
