Some of Europe's quirkiest architecture involves elevated railways and, as much of Vienna's U6 and U4 lines were built during the period, there is an abundance of Wagner-inspired, cast-iron infrastructure all around the outer ring road.
Yet it's not just the trains that are interesting. The brick archways created by building continuous 'bridges' on the Gürtel have leant this area narrow yet eminently usable spaces, which are nowadays occupied by garages, nightclubs, and even a McDonald's. Close to the U6 stop Thaliastraße, a seemingly small location called Chelsea attracts customers from all over Vienna.
Chelsea can be described as a mixture between a nightclub and a medium-scale gig venue, with a regular supply of surprisingly big names. During the day, Chelsea passes itself off as a sports bar, often playing not only Austrian but also English and German top-flight games. It is one of the best places to watch football in the city, but if you're desperate to see the game, come early to secure a good seat!
Alternatively, if you're a fan of alternative and rock music, then this is one of the best venues in the city. It's always extremely busy at weekends, which, due in part to the narrowness, certainly makes this venue intimate (tip: throw your clothes in the washing machine as soon as you get home). Looking for a cheap but fun night out? Here it is.
